Schaken
DoorJuli 2008:
Hullo people
I’m Andrew Lubowa; I joined Makula Foundation School in 2005
When the game of Chess was introduced at the School at first my interest was just to watch but not be part because I thought that chess play a non-performers reason that they spend most of their time bowed on the chess board without talking to each other! But one day when I heard that Teacher Moses was taking the chess club out for a tournament I decided to join the club and yes, this was my turning point as I begun to learn the game with a lot of confidence; however the only problem I got was how to arrange the pieces on the board. I learnt all the moves and I was selected to play for the School Chess Club!
The first time we played with our opponents was a draw with 6 points each but as the tournament progressed we emerged overall winners because our first opponents with whom we drew with lost a game to another club which we had beaten. This win instilled a chess spirit in our souls only that what pains me most is that all chess club members had to separate after the PLE exams. Only some kept contact were we could meet on Saturdays at Makula
Technically, I like a Horse (knight) when compared to the Bishop because it gives your opponent a hard time to know your next move, and when it checks your opponent’s King can’t block but rather he moves away. Most people loose morale when their Queen is captured; but the only advice I give them is to concentrate on the game because the game of chess is meant for intelligent and brave people not cowards.
Finally, I was very happy when Madame Cobie and Master Rogers asked me to come and give a helping hand in training the chess club at Makula Foundation School. Yes, this is where I am now every Wednesday afternoon and at noon of every Saturday of the week.
I like it and I love to train my fellow youngsters just for the “generation of excellence”
Good luck to you all, peace and love.
